theirgoldenboy: (Giggle)
It was their second Valentine’s Day together.

In fact, while their anniversary was technically in the end of January, right after Irene’s birthday, today was a very, very special day, too. Hell, smutty as it sounded, it was a year ago today that they’d first all been really together … as in having sex. Not in twos or even threes, although the weekend leading to Valentine’s had been Caleb’s first time with Pogue, too, something a very long, hurdled while in the making. But today was for all of them.

And while last year had been in a luxurious hotel room, with borrowed furniture and specialized cuisine, tonight Caleb was cooking in.

It was a four-course meal, one favorite course for each of them, and no, he didn’t forget himself, or he’d get glares that would decidedly spoil the mood. And he didn’t want that.

Three of those four courses could be finger-eaten. Or finger-fed. Maybe not neatly, as was particularly the case with the dessert, but it was a possibility. One that he suspected they would get around.

He also set the table properly. For four. With a white tablecloth, tall candlestick with rose-scented candles, crystal glasses, elegant silverware. Comfortable chairs. And not the large table they used when they had guests, either. A small one which would enable them to reach around and across it to touch each other very easily.

He prepared music, too. This time kind of cheating - by borrowing the soft jazz compilation that Dee had set up for them last year. Nobody had ever doubted he was sentimental, anyway - he saw no reason to disappoint that expectation. Especially since they did all like it.

And the bedroom... The familiar softness of Egyptian cotton sheets around fluffy soft light covers. Incense burned in the room before a quick airing, so it scented everything but did not choke the air.

Also, naturally, all kinds of things they might - probably would - need, at an easy reach. As well as a stand if they decided to kidnap some of the food to the bedroom, too.

All in readiness. All as good as he could make it.

The food kept warm, he settled to wait for Dee, and then Pogue and Irene, to find their way home after work.

Home, and love, and a special, special evening.
theirgoldenboy: (Broody in bed)
It was stupid o'clock in the morning of his birthday and Caleb was wide awake. Which was frustrating; the time wouldn't be for something like seventeen hours or more, yet, and he couldn't go back to sleep.

Which was a problem for a guy tangled up in bed with his boyfriend and two girlfriends - who were all sleeping, and with good reason. The three of them had jobs that they needed to be operational for in a few hours; somebody tossing and turning and waking them up at four? Much as they loved him, they didn't need that.

So he set to disengaging himself, slowly shifting his weight away from Dee, slipping his foot from under Irene's shin. Kissing Pogue's shoulder and lightly raising his arm to move out from under it, then sitting up and rising out of the bed with as little disturbance as he could manage. There was a glitter between eyelids here and there, shifting and stirring, but he murmured a reassurance, and that worked.

He slipped on sweats and a T and a jacket, and set out, in the pre-dawn (much pre-dawn) drizzle to walk some of the restlessness out.

It wasn't anticipation - or anxiety - that he'd once greeted his birthdays with. It wasn't dread, either, though. It was just memory of a day loaded with way too much. Too many memories, too many events, not enough of them good to balance out the miserable ones.

Although, truth be told, when he stopped to think of it - there had been only one miserable one, full of loss and pain and anger and Power and fire and rain, and one... questionable. Some that were cast over by the gloom of other events, but there had always been people who'd cheered him, made things easy and bright and wonderful, even if for small parts of the day. And considering how the last... oh. Eight months almost had been? He suspected today would be even more like a normal person's birthday. No, a happy person's birthday.

That was... very surprising, actually.

But instead of confusing, that thought brought a smile to his face. And while he knew he still couldn't sleep, all of a sudden he was missing the warm way in which their bodies had been tangled up so briefly ago. He didn't need Pogue or Dee to tell him that it was a good thing, on a walk in the chill early-fall rain that could easily have gone to brooding.

It was anticipatory instead, and he wasn't sure when exactly the last time when he'd felt that on the morning of this day had been.

His eyes had gotten accustomed enough to the faint light enough that a blotch of color, surprising this late in the season, made his smile widen.

When he returned to the house, he snuck back into the bedroom, hovering over the pillow end only briefly.

"Coming back to bed?"

He smiled down at the sleepy, quiet words. "No... too awake now."

"And too wet." Amusement leaked into the slurry words.

"And that. Try to get some more sleep, hmm?"

"Mm-hmm." Slight rustle of the sheets, a faint beat of silence... then, even quieter, "'py birthday, Caleb."

He ducked his head, and now the smile just didn't leave his face as he curled up in an armchair with a paperback that Reid had coaxed him into attempting to read.

Breakfast was best when fresh, anyway; he had some ideas about that already.
theirgoldenboy: (Dee: Formal)
This was taking longer than it should have. Longer than they'd expected; they really had not meant to be both away by now.

Caleb was... )

ooc: This applies to the Yay girls and Divergence 'verses (as it happens before they split, unless otherwise later discussed with Sarah's mun). It refers to RP events (described in the log) where Ginny is [profile] lilginnygirl and Chase is [profile] broken_circles. Warning: suicide attempt discussed/referred to. Disturbing.
Should Sarah's mun be willing to thread, Caleb would like to talk with her about it.

Log back here. )
theirgoldenboy: (Reid: Hitting on...)

Caleb was coming down the big staircase when Will half-burst, half-stumbled into the main lobby, the pale hair of Ash catching against the fabric of his shirt as he clutched the younger boy to him, one arm around his shoulders and the other under his knees. Reid's son looked even paler than usual; actually, both kids did. The teenager's voice was too much gasping and panting for the call to be too loud.

Caleb frowned, but, but picked up the call before bounding down the stairs to get to them. "Chase!" A few heartbeats, and he was in front of them, large arms reaching to relieve Will of his friend. What happened? )
theirgoldenboy: (Looking down (cap: Danvers))
Father... what were you thinking, leaving the deeds most momentous in your life without a word in writing or your closest soul to witness?
theirgoldenboy: (Four of us)
Tyler's suggestion on how to start that Christmas vacation off was literally snatching bliss from the jaws of disaster, and there weren't words enough for how grateful Caleb was that they were them and it worked out.
theirgoldenboy: (Smile!)
Caleb didn't recover the magic from the sadness that started when he was ten until the Christmas when his goddaughter reminded them all just what it all meant.
theirgoldenboy: (The brightest smile)
A very traditional excuse, and probably for the best that nobody thought to get any for the house on the Vineyard.
theirgoldenboy: (Looking down (cap: Danvers))
He felt like a lampoon, not letting go, he felt like a failure, he felt like he had given up on Pogue, he felt like there was no way out of it, back or forth or sideways, he felt like he had let go way too soon, and he had to spend a very long time curled up in the front seat of the car, head against the wheel, before his sight cleared and steadied enough for anything resembling his promise for safe driving to be possible.
theirgoldenboy: (Pogue: Mine. For me.)
Pogue's unexpected gesture would have delighted Caleb any time, but right then it got his eyes wide and soft, his heart swelling with actual hope, and, as he drifted off with the sound of the blond's muffled grin caressing his memory, for a moment he thought that maybe, one day, he might be able to relax the grip on what he had locked up inside without drowning them both.
theirgoldenboy: (Pogue: Mine. For me.)
Caleb wanted to run and hide in the deepest, most miserable hole, unworthy to make his friends have to deal with him, but one look at Pogue's face, the set of his shoulders, let him know that if he didn't at least try to fix this... nobody would manage it.

This applies to this journal and [personal profile] letsdropin; the Pogue relevant is [profile] lieutenantwitch and Chase is [profile] broken_circles. Tyler is [profile] their_babyboy. Ginny is [profile] lilginnygirl.

Girls YAY (This name is subject to change): Currently default 'verse. Pogue and Kate split up around spring break of their senior year in high school; Caleb and Sarah's relationship persevered. Chase and Ginny had both meetings, dating during high school senior year, and later towards the end of junior year at Brown, the additional meeting during which Ginny gets pregnant. Isabel is born. Reid goes to medical school; meets Alya there. A year later, Chase goes to the same medical school, and they end up roommates. Pogue, in Ipswich, opens up his garage; Irene ([profile] shecan_fix_that) starts working there; eventually they date. Tyler goes to a graduate degree in something literary, then returns to teach at Spenser. Dates a guy for about three years; then that guy just... leaves. After that, Beatrice (Bea) reappears in his life.
Who with whom? Well, in this 'verse, Caleb and Pogue never have sex. Reid and Pogue do; as well as (unless playing with another Tyler) Reid and Tyler.

As in all 'verses, when any of the boys are dating (and/or married), the rest of the boys, no touchee. Chase being occasionally an exception to that, until he gets the hang of it.

Divergence: This is a branch from the above 'verse. When Isabel is born, Chse does something incredibly stupid (to himself) in front of Ginny and Caleb; in the aftershock (and watch), Caleb does something also stupid, together with Chase. Then he was even more of an idiot about it. In the end, even though there were no repeat offenses, Sarah decides that there were things that not even Caleb Danvers is worth putting up with, and ends it. Caleb takes months to recover from that, in the meanwhile the boys making acquaintance with Dee ([profile] ihasataser), who slowly develops a crush on him that'll last years. Caleb, on the other hand, decides to act on the other love he betrayed with Chase; however, Pogue is at the time (first semester of senior year at Harvard) very settled in being single and not up to being in a relationship. That alone freaks Caleb out, and then the second blow of being rejected, washes over him, the backlash upsetting Pogue in turn. For a while, the boys are upset enough to almost seem to be falling apart (Chase blaming himself for it, too, oops); however, they do pull together, by degrees starting to cope with the upset and owing to Tyler's idea for a get-away. Then the events follow the ones in girls YAY 'verse, minus Sarah, until about a month after Pogue and Irene hook up. There's weird kissing and pot, and in the end, out of one couple and two singles, Pogue, Irene, Caleb, and Dee emerge as a more-or-less foursome.
And the world doesn't even end.

Pile o' puppies: Pogue and Kate split up around spring break of their senior year in high school. Caleb and Sarah break up sometime during freshman year at Harvard. Somewhat later, when they're back at home, Caleb walks in on Reid and Pogue; shortly after that, Pogue-and-Caleb begins. Reid and Tyler fool around the way they often do. Reid and Caleb figure out their differences, mostly by Reid crawling into Caleb's lap and kissing him, a bit out of the blue for the older boy. Second semester of senior year at Harvard, Tyler walks in on them kissing a lot and kind of runs away; Pogue decides it's the perfect time to return the walking-in on Caleb. Foursome ensues. Later, Caleb and Pogue are more and more couply; Tyler and Reid go to grad school together/very close. Eventually steadying - but not as a couple, but a threesome with a girl. Which proves surprisingly stable.

Cliffs of Insanity: Pogue and Kate split up around spring break of their senior year in high school. Caleb and Sarah break up sometime during freshman year at Harvard. Caleb and Pogue hook up. ... and then Kate changes her mind, about their junior year at Harvard. Grows up, comes back to Pogue. Caleb steps back, after about two years together with Pogue. Not very happy. They graduate; Pogue and Kate return to Ipswich; Caleb, Reid, and Tyler scatter around grad schools (kind of; Reid and Tyler actually go to the same one). ... Caleb running into Chase. No, they don't have a smack-down trying to kill each other; Chase has had his first run-in with Ginny and is changed, somewhat. Caleb's free-falling, in a way. Things go through getting stoned together and ... more. Until they're basically dating. Oops. The rocky relationship evens out some when they adopt one of Chase's patients, Mary; or maybe it's also due to the fact that Caleb is Caleb and he doesn't commit halfway.
Things are always on the edge, in this 'verse. There can be, and is, happiness, but the danger of things tipping over the cliff and spinning away into destruction or insanity is always there.
